Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
No. The needles used in acupuncture are incredibly fine, about the width of a strand of hair. Cicely uses a gentle, precise technique, and most patients hardly feel the needle being inserted. Acupuncture is a calming, deeply relaxing experience that leaves many feeling refreshed and at ease.
What shall I wear?
For your comfort, please wear loose-fitting clothing if possible, as it allows for easy access to acupuncture points located along the arms and legs. If treatment requires access to other areas, such as the back, a gown will be provided. Cicely is dedicated to creating a warm, respectful environment and will ensure your comfort and modesty throughout your treatment.
Do I need to do anything before?
It is reccomended to eat a light snack prior to treatment. Please prepare any questions you may have and Cicely will be happy to answer anything.
Is acupuncture safe?
When acupuncture is performed by a fully trained and qualifed pracitioner the risk of serious adverse event are low. Research indicates that acupuncture is among the safest treatment options available in the UK. For more information on acupuncture safety, please visit the British Acupuncture Council.
Are there any side effects to acupuncture?
Side effects are rare, with mild fatigue and slight dizziness after a session being the most common. Occasionally, a tiny bruise may appear at an acupuncture point. Both of which will clear on their own.
How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncturists treat the whole person, not just their condition, so each treatment plan is unique. Weekly sessions are common initially, with long-term issues often requiring bi-weekly or monthly sessions. For lifelong conditions, some choose ongoing acupuncture for health management.
Does NHS reccommened acupuncture?
NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and SIGN (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) recommend acupuncture for chronic pain, migraines, and headaches. GPs can refer to BAcC practitioners, the PSA-accredited register for traditional acupuncture, ensuring professional standards and patient confidence.
